A gantry machining center refers to a machining center in which the Z-axis of the spindle is set perpendicularly to the workbench. The overall structure is a large machining center with a portal structure frame composed of double columns and a top beam. There is a crossbeam in the middle of the double columns. It is especially suitable for processing large workpieces and workpieces with complex shapes.


Structural features of door processing center:

1. Workbench: The workbench of the gantry machining center is basically rectangular. Large castings such as workbenches, lathes, columns, beams and sleepers are made of cast iron. The inner cavity of the casting is a honeycomb composite arrangement structure with advanced design. It has been aged and secondary tempered to eliminate residual internal stress, stabilize the material, and ensure the stability of workpiece processing accuracy and machine bed life.

2. Gantry: The gantry consists of a beam and two columns. It can be divided into three types: fixed beam, positioning block locking beam segmented lifting, and random beam lifting.


3. Sleeve: Sleeves can be divided into two types: open type and closed type. The open structure of the gate is clamped on the main spindle box through the pressure plate, so that the cross-sectional area of the gate is larger; the closed structure of the gate is clamped in the main spindle box, so the cross-sectional area of the gate is small.

 

4. Tool Magazines: There are three basic types of tool magazines: turret, drum, and chain length.

 

5. Attachment head library: The processing of large and complex parts usually requires many attachment heads. The attachment head is specially designed according to the processing requirements of the workpiece, and is generally divided into right-angle heads, extension heads, special angle heads, and universal heads.

 

6. Accuracy: The accuracy of a machine tool refers to the original accuracy of the machine tool without external loads. Accuracy is usually expressed by its opposite - the deviation from the ideal state (referred to as error). The smaller the error, the higher the accuracy.

Gantry machining center is a new type of production and processing technology. 

Its main task is to customize the production and processing program flow, that is, change the original manual production to software programming work, make the entire processing process, processing process parameters and offset data information into the program flow, and use it to operate the production processing of CNC lathes . The production process of CNC lathe gantry CNC lathe is basically the same as that of ordinary CNC lathe in terms of working principle, but the entire process of CNC lathe processing is mechanically automated. Therefore, the gantry machining center has the following advantages:

 

(1) High level of automation technology and high production and manufacturing efficiency. Except for manual blank clamping, other production processes can be automatically performed using CNC lathes. If fully automated loading and unloading methods are integrated, the main components of the processing plant will be unmanned. CNC lathe processing reduces employee labor efficiency and improves operating standards. It eliminates the need for auxiliary operations such as wire pulling, multiple clamping, positioning, and inspection, and effectively improves production efficiency.

(2) Strong adaptability to production and processing goals. When disassembling and replacing production processing targets, in addition to the clamping method of disassembling and replacing CNC blades and processing rough blanks, only the program needs to be rewritten without other complicated adjustments, which reduces the management cycle time of the production site.

(3) High processing precision and stable quality. The accuracy of production and processing specifications is between 0.005 ~ 0.01mm, which is not affected by the complexity of the parts. Since most of the actual operations are performed automatically by the equipment, incorrect human factors are eliminated and dimensional consistency of high-volume parts is enhanced. At the same time, position detection equipment is applied to high-precision CNC lathes to further improve the processing accuracy of CNC lathes.

 

(4) It is convenient to establish communication with electronic computers and can form a complete group control system. Since the gantry machining center adopts electronic information operation and is connected with the auxiliary design system, it can easily create a combined CAD/CAM system, and it is also easier to complete block operations.

Operation process of gantry machining center:

1. Operators need to be familiar with and master the performance and characteristics of the gantry machining center machine tool. Ensure that the emergency stop switch can function quickly and effectively in an emergency to avoid injury accidents.

 

2. Wear labor protection equipment as required. It is strictly prohibited to wear gloves when operating.

 

3. When the equipment is working, do not touch the electronic switch with wet hands to avoid electric shock. Do not touch any moving parts with your hands.

 

4. Do not place tools or unprocessed workpieces on the gantry machining center or on moving objects.

 

5. The computer desk or workbench next to the machine must be sturdy and cannot be placed on moving parts.

6. When moving the workpiece up and down, stop the machine first and pay attention to maintaining an appropriate distance between the workpiece and the tool. During the operation of the machine, do not open the front door or the left and right protective covers at will to avoid personal injury.


7. After the tool setting is completed, you need to run it with DRY run first to ensure that the program is correct.

 

8. After a power outage or emergency shutdown, the three axes should be restored to their original mechanical positions when shutting down.

 

9. Do not disassemble any related parts of the limit switch or protection switch without authorization.

 

10. Before completing the work and leaving the machine, the control power switch on the operation panel and the main switch of the electrical box should be turned off.

Choosing a good tool library for the gantry machining center can increase the tool changing speed. 

The tool magazine of HKAA's gantry machining center has many different forms, such as bamboo hat type, knife arm type, synchronous type, flying saucer type, etc.


The only tool magazines used in ordinary vertical gantry machining centers are bamboo hat type and tool arm type. The replacement speed of the arm-type tool magazine can save 50% of the time compared with the bamboo hat-type tool magazine. It is more appropriate to use an arm-type tool magazine in batch processing and production.


Synchronous and flying disk tool magazines are dedicated tool magazines for high-speed gantry machining centers and drilling centers. This shows that the tool magazine of high-speed machine tools also has an arm-type tool magazine, and the tool changing speed of these two types of tool magazines is much faster than that of an arm-type tool magazine.


Tool change can be completed within one second at the fastest, saving processing auxiliary time. But the effect is not as obvious as the bamboo hat type tool magazine and the knife arm type tool magazine.
