Custom 3, 4 and 5-Axis CNC Machined Aluminum Parts

HKAA manufactures custom aluminum components from customer drawings. The machining approach is selected around the part geometry, datum requirements and surfaces that must fit together. A flat mounting plate, a component with features around its circumference and a housing with angled pockets can require different setups, even when they use the same aluminum alloy.

    Choosing the Right Machining Approach

    • 3-axis machining: suitable for accessible flat faces, slots, pockets and drilled hole patterns. Features on other sides may require repositioning and a dedicated fixture.
    • 4-axis machining: adds a rotary axis for access around a component. This can help machine features on several sides while reducing manual repositioning.
    • 5-axis machining: provides additional tool orientation for angled faces and complex geometry. Its value depends on access, workholding and the relationship between critical features.

More axes do not automatically mean a better or less expensive part. Our quotation review considers the simplest practical process that can meet the drawing. Explore our CNC milling services for related machining options.

    Drawing and Material Requirements

Please specify the aluminum grade and temper, overall dimensions, critical fits, threaded features and surface finish. If the material has not been selected, identify the operating environment, loading conditions and finishing requirements so material options can be discussed before production.

Thin walls, deep pockets and closely spaced features require particular attention to tool access and workholding. Tolerances should be assigned to functional requirements rather than applied equally to every dimension. Feasibility and inspection requirements are confirmed during drawing review.

    Surface Finish and Assembly Considerations

State whether the part should be supplied as machined or requires a specified surface treatment. For anodized or blasted components, identify visible surfaces, color expectations, masking areas and dimensions that must be maintained after finishing. Threads, mating faces and electrical contact areas may need separate instructions.

    Inspection Requirements

Identify the dimensions and geometric relationships that are critical to assembly. Datum references, inspection locations and any required measurement records should be included with the RFQ. This helps align the machining and inspection approach with the way the component will be used.

Send an RFQ for Your Aluminum Component

    • 3D CAD model and a dimensioned 2D drawing, when available.
    • Material grade, temper, quantity and expected repeat order volume.
    • Critical tolerances, threads, surface roughness and finish requirements.
    • Inspection documents, packaging and requested delivery date.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does my part need 5-axis machining?

Not necessarily. Angled features, tool access and the relationship between surfaces determine whether 5-axis machining offers an advantage. Some parts can be produced efficiently with fewer axes and suitable fixtures.

What if I only have a 3D model?

Send the model with notes identifying critical dimensions, material and finish. A 2D drawing is especially helpful for tolerances, datum references, threads and inspection requirements that a model alone may not communicate.

Can prototype and repeat production requirements differ?

Yes. Quantity, delivery priorities and inspection needs can affect fixture choices and setup planning. Include both the initial quantity and anticipated repeat demand when requesting a quotation.
